Spring 2005:

Voter Registration Drive

By active marketing and a partnership with Chipotle, over 300 students came to Chipotle to receive a free burrito and learn about political activism.  Our volunteers, hard at work, registered more than 80 people to vote.

SGA Rock The Vote

The Student Government Association, in coordination with the national Rock the Vote effort, organized a get out the vote event, that included music, door prizes, individuals deputized to register voters, and free food. The University Democrats worked a booth, handing out literature on candidates and encouraging membership to join our organization.

Dallas Cowboys concessions

We raised $250 at this fundraiser.

Sonic Car-Hop

In an effort to raise money, we worked a total of 8 hours at the Sonic at Frankfort an Preston for tips. We raised over $200 dollars.

New Democratic Vision for America

Our objective for this project was to define a renewed vision for the country based on the collective voice of students. We sought to eventually influence the Democratic Party's agenda for the 2004 election. It began with a campus-wide forum for the two weeks leading up to the election, comprised of small group meetings dealing with issues of Economy, Health Care, Education, Equal Opportunity, Environment, and the War on Terror.   At the end of our committee work, we presented the results of our endeavor, a platform addressing the aforementioned issues, at a Campus Convention.  This included free food, music, representatives from the Kerry/Edwards campaign, and 6 local Democratic candidates, including Congressman Martin Frost.  In presenting our platform to the candidates and the UTD community, we advocated political awareness and activism in an attempt to build a nation on the voice of the youth. To facilitate this campaign, we raised over $2,000.

Hip-Hop the Vote

In coordination with the Black Student Alliance, this voter education program was geared towards African-American students. It addressed problems facing African-American and other minority voters.  It included a professor who talked about past and recent voter disenfranchisement and the tactics used. An election judge discussed what documents were needed in order to vote, how to avoid becoming a victim of voter disenfranchisement and what do if you were faced with it. Faculty members addressed the issues that were faced in the 2000 Florida Elections as well as self expression and the importance of voting.  This event educated over 60 students and concluded with discussion and pizza.
